What draws you to this work? Why is studying Black girlhood important to you as a student at Spelman College?

Black girls deserve to show up as their authentic selves in every space, and I am committed to ensuring they are afforded this opportunity. As a young Black woman, engaging in the work of Black girl liberation is a healing experience. Black girlhood studies encourages self-reflection, personal growth, and storytelling as an act of resistance and a mode of garnering justice for Black girls. Spelman College is the epicenter of young Black womanhood, and by studying amongst women who share similar trauma and pride from once being a Black girl, Black girlhood studies is more tangible to me now than ever before. Spelman has shown me that we cannot study gender without studying Black girlhood and these studies are crucial when tasked with rasing happy, healthy, liberated Black girls and women.
