What draws you to this work? Why is studying Black girlhood important to you as a student at Spelman College?
I am drawn to Black Girlhood Studies because I yearn to reconnect with my purpose as a Black woman in society. Growing up, I have been disconnected from myself and with this work in helping younger girls maintain their Black Girlhood, I hope to regain that within myself. As a student at Spelman, this work is particularly important to me because it draws me closer to my identity as a Black woman surrounded by unapologetic Blackness and expands my intellectual abilities for activism.

The Impact of Black Girls Cultural Liberalism on the Politics of Spelman, Willams, S.
This research examines the intersectionality of Black women by exploring the perspectives of college-aged Spelman students from diverse backgrounds. Historically, the politics of Spelman College have shaped an unspoken stereotype of the "Spelman Woman." In analyzing the institution’s evolving culture, this study considers two key political ideologies: liberalism — defined as openness to new ideas and acceptance of diverse behaviors — and conservatism, characterized by resistance to change and adherence to traditional values.
From longstanding traditions such as the White Attire Ceremony to contemporary conversations on gender fluidity, Spelman’s culture appears to have gradually shifted toward a more liberal ethos. Observations suggest that institutional traditions have evolved in response to cultural climates and the beliefs of students over time. While many students initially perceive Spelman as a conservative institution, their perceptions often shift to view it as more progressive after firsthand experiences.
This research is motivated by preliminary observations gathered through student perspectives. To investigate whether Spelman has historically been socially conservative despite its liberal arts foundation, this study will delve into the Spelman Archives, analyze opinion pieces, and potentially include survey responses from current students. Through this exploration, the project seeks to offer insight into the nuanced and evolving identity of the Spelman Woman.
